The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Extended Versions
New Line Productions, Inc. (PG 13)

by Sister Jennie Worman

The Lord of the Rings is a classic epic story written by author JRR Tolkein. This study takes a look at the trilogy in its finest glory. The three movies that are covered in this movie Bible study are as follows: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

Tolkein never made any of the Christian symbolism in his books blatantly obvious, but they are there throughout the books and the movies. I think that looking at such a popular movie series such at The Lord of the Rings helps youth to see that God is not just in the Bible and in church on Sunday mornings but rather in popular culture as well, and even more, in their own lives.

Therefore, the point of my Bible study is to take a very detailed look at what Tolkein is trying to say about Christianity and to see how it plays out in the movies, and then how these ideas relate to our own lives. I created study guides to hand out to the youth who are watching the movie along with you, the leader. I've provided a leaders’ guide equipped with details about stopping and starting cues for each section of the movies and helpful discussion hints to questions I have raised if the youth are stuck or perhaps the question has stumped you as well.

This movie Bible study is very rich; I strongly encourage leaders to take their time with youth as they reflect on and discuss the movies. Be sure to take time for side distractions, as there will be many. There are many powerful images in the movie. You could just rush through the questions, but I encourage you instead to meet your youth where they are. You can always go back to the next question the following meeting.

I hope you enjoy watching the movies through a Christian lens as much as I enjoyed writing it.
