Real life is all around you. Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out what to do next.
In the Lutheran tradition-there is this thing called vocation. Vocation is not a job, or a thing---but it is about WHO you are-WHO God created you to be.
Vocation is arrived upon in various ways. Sometimes, instead of one “aha” moment, there are a series of “o.k. moments.” O.k. now I’m beginning to figure myself out. O.k. now I’m starting to reflect on my choices, my gifts, and my abilities. Sometimes these “o.k. moments” lead to an “aha” moment. Back to the facts. Sometimes, you just need to have a job in order to pay your bills. That’s a fact. Sometimes, a job might lead you into a “career,” but sometimes it won’t. Jobs and careers have the potential of changing several times in the life of an individual. As they change, your vocation remains the same. It is influenced by the jobs you have, the career you choose, the people in your life-but in an ever changing world your vocation is what is constant. Vocation is who you are, who you are called and created to be. Uncovering your vocation means coming to a fuller knowledge of who you are, of who God has created you to be.
When you are trying to figure out what to do next---you could ask yourself these questions:
What’s your story? Who are you? What’s your life about? How do all of the pieces of your life fit together (studies, skills, gifts, talents, passions, values)? How do these combine to define who you are and help you meet the needs of the community in which you live?
In this space, we will feature resources to help you figure out how to understand who you are called to be.
