"Luther Kommt"
Luther is coming -- so read the
flyers in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Luther will arrive in
Wittenberg (again) on September 20, 2008 -- and will be rowed across the
Elbe River by Pastor Friedrich Schorlemmer -- all as part of a
larger celebration --
September 20-21, 2008.
Martin Luther first came to
Wittenberg in 1508. In 1517, he went public with the 95
Theses changing the religious landscape forever.
This time, Wittenberg is inviting
its citizens, fellow Germans and the world
to remember and celebrate the Reformation heritage. On
September 20, there will be the opening of the Lutheran World
Federation, Luther Garden. That evening, the Old
City will become the stage as lights, music and drama
celebrate Luther's arrival. On September 21, LWF
President and ELCA Presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson, will
preach at a special worship service in the Castle
Church.

20
years after "Die Wende" -- the Fall of the Wall
-- In the Fall of 2009, many cities in Germany
, especially in the former East Germany (including
Wittenberg), will be remembering the events of the Fall
of 1989 and the Peaceful Revolution that led to the
collapse of the Communist governments in the East the
opening up of borders and the bcoming down of walls.
The Center is ready to work with groups, especially
university and college groups who might want to include
a visit to important sites -- Leipzig, Berlin -- in a
Wittenberg-based program focusing on the Fall of the
Wall. Please contact us. |

While 2017 will be a special year in
Wittenberg, the city will begin to anticipate the 500th
Jubilee with special events, presentations, conferences,
concerts and worship services as part
of the Luther Decade. The
ELCA Wittenberg Center e.V. looks forward to finding ways to
share the Reformation spirit of Wittenberg with the many
who will be taking part in our programs during the
next 10 years.
Please consider how your congregation or Synod can join
the Luther Decade, perhaps enhancing your experience
with a trip to Luther's Land. |
