Welcome to the Synodical Relations web page. Whether you are a synodical leader seeking specific information, or an individual with a desire to learn more about the interrelatedness we share as synods in the ELCA, we are here to serve you. Our vision for the work we do is to foster empowered leaders serving in healthy, mission-driven synods. We're interested in hearing how we can assist you in achieving that goal. Feel free to contact any of us on the staff with your questions or comments. And, check back here often. We'll be updating this page regularly to provide you with helpful, up-to-date information. Thanks for your interest, and blessings in your service.

The Rev. Kathie Bender Schwich
Executive for Synodical and Constituent Relations

Our work together ...

This department's fourfold responsibilities are to:

>Provide staff services for the Conference of Bishops

and all its committees;

> Support synodical bishops and staff;

> Coordinate the relationships between the

churchwide organizations and synods; and

> Provide budget and staff who relate to chaplaincies

in the armed forces and other federal agencies.

As a unit within the Office of the Presiding Bishop, we assist the bishop in pastoral care for synodical leaders and provide transition assistance for synods when there is a change in bishop. Another important area of work is the assignment process. When seminarians are approved for service on one of the ELCA's rosters, they are assigned to a region and synod in a process coordinated by this department. A deployed staff person in each region assists synod bishops and their staffs in requesting candidates who can be recommended to congregations.

In partnership with the coordinator for mission support and the Synodical-Churchwide Relations Committee of the Conference of Bishops, annual consultations with each of the 65 synods are planned and conducted.
