The trauma following a natural disaster is physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual. Health care for residents, especially for those without insurance, is particularly challenging. New Orleans’ largest public hospital, serving the poor for over 250 years, was at one point in its history called the L’Hôpital des Pauvres de la Charité (Hospital for the Poor). Charity Hospital sustained severe flood damage during Hurricane Katrina and its future remains in question. In the meantime, people living in poverty and those without health insurance are being underserved. The emotional damage from Hurricane Katrina still lingers. The mental health professionals who have returned to the city are overwhelmed, and the basic needs of many are unmet. Some say the mental health impact is far greater than what they've ever experienced. ELCA youth and adults will provide healing by simply giving people the opportunity tell their stories.
