Enviroment close

The environment suffered from the high winds and tainted flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. As a result, children can’t play in playgrounds because the soil in some of them is contaminated. In the wake of the storm, an invasive species of tree, the Chinese tallow, has become a problem throughout New Orleans. It is choking out other vegetation and is contributing to the devastation of crucial wetlands. ELCA youth will help eradicate Chinese tallow growths and plant other vegetation that contributes to wetlands restoration. Youth will also be replacing contaminated soil in playgrounds, and cleaning parks, levies, and other outdoor sites that provide habitats for wildlife and that provide flood protection.
