OCHA oPt: OCHA is an office of the UN formed in 1998 as a reorganization of the UN's Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA). Its stated mission is to "mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to: alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies, advocate for the rights of people in need, promote preparedness and prevention, and facilitate sustainable solutions." In late 2000 OCHA opened an office (oPt) in the Jerusalem in response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the West Bank and Gaza. One of the things this office does is create free PowerPoint presentations for public use. Below are the ones we found most useful.

NOTE: Some of the slides are quite large and take awhile to load.

  • Closures in the West Bank: This presentation briefly describes the rationale behind closures and then outlines the different types used in the West Bank. It also has a map of the West Bank used to visually layout the placement and prevalence of each type of closure.

  • Fragmentation of the West Bank: This presentation starts by deals with the continuing fragmentation of the West Bank. It discusses the effects of the Oslo Peace Accords, closures, the road system, and Israeli land designation in the West Bank on the continuity of Palestinian land.

  • West Bank Barrier: This presentation starts by showing the two basic forms of the West Bank Barrier: as a fence matrix and as a wall of concrete slabs. It then describes the effects of the Barrier on Palestinian movement, using the Arab city of Qalqiliya as an example. It also presents the ICJ's advisory opinion of the Barrier issued in July 2004.
