Urban MinistryNorth American culture
continues to become more and more urban and challenging. To help the
ELCA effectively engage this reality, the 1997 Churchwide Assembly
passed In the City for Good, a 10 year urban initiative.
Combining urban expertise with an attempt to provide increased
resources, this initiative marks a commitment on the part of the
ELCA to remain a leader in reaching out to urban dwellers.
Summer Urban Ministry
Institute
After a review of the first years of the "In the City for Good"
initiative at the Urban Summit held in 2003, it became clear that mere
funding was not producing the desired outcomes. If a real and lasting
impact were to be made on urban ministry in the ELCA, leadership
development would be crucial. In response, the grant process was
discontinued and the Summer Urban
Ministry Institute was created for training congregational
leadership teams. Contact your Mission Director for more information.
