Mission Partners, Mission Founders – What's the Difference?

While there is some overlap between the two programs, basically, Mission Founders start new congregations and Mission Partners support their growth.

Mission Founders

  • Fund all or a portion of a mission developer's compensation package for three years $180,000) at a new U.S. mission site.

  • Support the new ministry with prayer and encouragement, mentoring, volunteers, or in-kind gifts.

  • Donations are administered by the Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission unit or an agreed-upon local fiscal agent.

  • Since 1996, over $5 million in gifts have been provided and enabled the start of  108 congregations beyond those started through the budget of the Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission unit.

Mission Partners

  • Provide financial gifts to new and renewing ELCA congregations for Christian education materials, musicians, publicity items, rent, office equipment and supplies, sound equipment, and other necessary items.

  • Support the new ministry with prayer and encouragement, mentoring, volunteers, or in-kind gifts.

  • Donations may be directed through Mission Partners-Chicago, the donor's synod office, or may be given directly to the congregation.

  • Over $5 million annually is provided by ELCA congregations to other ELCA congregations or missions through the Mission Partners program.
