María
"Liz" Conner-Santos says that in a Lutheran church, 21
years ago, she heard the Gospel of God’s grace for the first time.
Today, she is a lay mission developer reorganizing Iglesia Luterana
Cristo Rey, a former Anglo ELCA congregation now ministering in
South Omaha’s Hispanic community.
"I came to believe that God
molded and prepared me for this call through four years of prayer
and a personal relationship with Christ. My ministry is to invite
others in the Hispanic community to come hear God’s Gospel of
grace and love in Jesus Christ. Because we incorporate Hispanic
culture, traditions and rituals in our Lutheran worship tradition,
people feel loved and welcomed. Our calendar is filled with many
carefully planned celebrations, and in just one year we had five
baptisms and 16 first communions. The ELCA needs to do this work on
behalf of our Lord and Savior. When people ask me, "How is the
ministry?" I want to say, "Tell John that the lame are
walking and the blind can see."
