Having
served rural and university student ministries in India, and in the
Asia Pacific regional office in Hong Kong, Pastor Daniel Peter
Penumaka has been called to develop a ministry among South Asians in
one of New York City’s diverse neighborhoods, Glen Oaks, Queens.
"I am doing something NEW in
ministry, and I am excited. I’ve become a catalyst for the ELCA’s
vision of reaching out to people from varied cultures and
backgrounds who have come to this land searching for opportunities
and new possibilities. I meet people in their needs, frustrations
and worries. Kamal, who feels isolated and speaks little English,
emigrated from Punjab 10 years ago. We met her in the public library
as she struggled to help with her daughter’s homework. Gagandeep
is our daughter’s classmate, and now both come to our home every
evening so that my spouse can teach them. They are examples of
people for whom Ashirad Lutheran Ministry builds hope — a
worshiping community where their concerns are respected and cared
for."
