Welcome to the Devotions/Reflections part of the web site for Open a World of Possibilities: Nicaragua. These pages give you several opportunities to follow a thoughtful observer into the middle of Nicaragua, to see what she saw, feel what she felt, exult and be sad with her.

Through the eyes of Emily Demuth Ishida, you'll also get to see how God is working mightily through the Nicaraguan projects of Lutheran World Relief and through Iglesia Luterana Fe y Esperanza de Nicaragua (ILFE), the indigenous Lutheran church body in Nicaragua.

Join Emily in her reflections and devotions, adding your own deepest thoughts and prayers to what you read. Join all of us who support the work of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its partners around the world, adding your prayers and contributions to those of millions of other Lutherans.

May God bless your reading and reflecting about life in Nicaragua and its connection to your own.

Seeing with New Eyes
The devastation of a forest fire brings to Emily's mind the question of seeing blessings and beauty in what previously seemed hopeless or death-laden. [read devotion]

Home Decorating
Emily is surprised by a simple symbol that "decorates" a home with delightful beauty, and finds hope in that symbol-come-to-life. [read devotion]

Quality and Quantity of Life
"Of what does a good life consist?" asks Emily, and finds a good answer in the crowded streets of Managua, Nicaragua.
[read devotion]

Paradise or Mouth of Hell
"Hell" and "paradise" are often close to each other, as Emily muses about natural disasters in Nicaragua. [read devotion]

A Message of Hope
The Gospel brings hope, and assures Emily (and us) that the message invites our sharing it with others. [read devotion]

On Clutter
Emily reflects on "clutter" as a symbol of a lifestyle that requires careful examination or revision. [read devotion]
