Rename your congregation
(15 minutes)
In this activity, the “naming” activity continues,
this time in a make-believe “renaming” of your congregation.
Here are the directions:
- Think about what you’ve experienced so far: You’ve heard
how names tell who we are; you’ve met faithful/hopeful
people in a “Faith and Hope” Lutheran Church; and you’ve
talked about especially important examples of God’s people
in this congregation.
- Put all these ideas together with this make-believe
instruction: The leaders of the Lutheran Church have decided
that there are too many Lutheran churches with the same name
as ours. They want us to rename our church so that its
name will tell exactly who we are.
- The name doesn’t have to be pretty or fancy – and it may
very well turn out to be a variation on our present name.
But our name has to change!
- If you have time, design a logo or symbol that might
help interpret the new name you’ve chosen.
Turn table groups loose on this task,
providing paper and pencils. Tell them that they have only
five minutes for this task!
When five minutes have elapsed, bring the table groups back
together as a large group and ask for each group’s report on
the new name they have suggested. If helpful, show the logo
they have drawn.
