The day the complainers
got their wish
(10 minutes)
Today’s session begins with a make-believe story about a place
and a time when unappreciative school children – complainers –
actually got their wish: Everything they complained about disappeared! The story leads listeners to a major point:
Complaining about what is actually a gift of God may
eventually result in that gift disappearing, if only because
of misuse or nonuse. The story is printed on the handout, “The
day the complainers got their wish,” which you will distribute
after you have told the story.
With a brief introduction – today’s session is about joyful
appreciation of the gift of learning, education and schools –
launch directly into the telling of the story. When you have
finished with the story, distribute copies of the story, and
talk about this make-believe tale:
- Why do you think that the complaining children always
complained?
- Why didn’t they learn their lesson before they came
home?
- What makes anyone think that they have the right to
complain?
- Does God complain about us? Why or why not? How do you
know?
Finish the introductory activity with a few summary
comments and move directly into the showing of the video
segment that follows.
