Introducing the
travel journal
(15 minutes)
Travel journals help people on a journey to record and
remember their experiences. During the learning experiences of
OWP: Nicaragua, participants will have time to make their own
travel journals. In today’s session, participants create the
covers and complete the first page(s).
Distribute the
materials you have assembled for the covers of the travel
journals. The journals can be any size, but a half-page size
(5 ˝ x 8 inches) is an easy format to create. Covers can be
made from construction paper, card stock, cardboard rectangles
covered with cloth or clear plastic sheets.
Because the journals will receive new pages each week, be
sure that the binding is removable and reusable. (For example,
punch holes on one margin and use bendable brass brads to
fasten the covers together.)
Distribute copies of the handout, “Journey to Nicaragua,”
to each participant. This will serve as the title page. Direct
participants to decorate or color both the title page and the
cover. As participants work, explain how these journals will
capture their thoughts about the experiences they will have
during the sessions of OWP: Nicaragua.
When the time period has come to a close, you can either
collect participants’ journals – the preferred option if you
will be offering other OWP: Nicaragua learning experiences –
or send them home with participants.
As the sessions of OWP: Nicaragua progress, you may find
other materials for participants’ travel journals, newspaper
articles, the results of Web searches, first-person accounts
of travel, etc. Format the materials to the size of the
travel journal pages and make copies for all participants.
Encourage them to find their own materials about Nicaragua,
and to add those to their personal journal as well.
