International Day of Peace

September 21 is designated by the UN as the International Day of Peace. The WCC is asking that congregations observe it by engaging in a world day of prayer. Many congregations will be doing special prayers for peace on the preceding Sunday, September 19.

Peace Emphasis Bulletin Insert

The Decade for a Culture of Nonviolence (2001-2010) is an excellent time to plan for peace emphases in your setting. A reproducible bulletin insert available here describes the Decade and provides prayers of peace, hymn suggestions, and ways to participate in the Decade.

Use it to introduce and promote the Decade and raise awareness of peace issues.

It can be used throughout the year during worship, classes, committees meetings, in schools and at home.

One time it can be used is October 16-24 to coordinate with peace days scheduled in your community and organizations from around the world, such as the United Nations and the World Council of Churches, for example. An emphasis provides a time to focus on the issues, engage in concentrated study, plan action steps for the coming year, and celebrate the many efforts in peacemaking from the previous year.
