Water: America’s Endangered Lifeline
Winter 2000 MOSAIC

I. Superior Testimonies
Walter Sve brins in his catch.
Synopsis: While of particular concern to the many ELCA members who live in a crescent around the Great Lakes, the integrity of these five bodies of water is important to all Americans. The Great Lakes contain 20 percent of the world’s fresh water supply on a planet where 95 percent of the water is salt. This issue of MOSAIC begins by visiting the greatest of these lakes in order to focus on God’s gift of water, its power to both sustain and destroy, its centrality for all life, and our human dependancy on it -- both materially and spiritually.

II. Our Fresh Water: Surfacing the Issues
The Blue HeronSynopsis: MOSAIC first takes you aboard
The Blue Heron as it trawls the bottom of Lake Superior for sediment samples. The next stop is Duluth, Minnesota’s, new Great Lakes Aquarium dedicated solely to the study of fresh water and its ecosystems, making it the only facility of its kind in the world. Finally, we talk with the Director of the Central Lake Superior Watershed Partnership who points out why people 2,000 miles away should care about the Great Lakes.
