I. Basins and Towels: ELCA Diaconal Ministry
Ardie SenftSynopsis: This story introduces viewers to diaconal ministry, a new form of rostered lay ministry that helps to extend congregational ministry into a wider community. "This is an end for me. I'm not on my way to another call. I have arrived," says diaconal candidate Ardie Senft, who works with children at an after-school program at Trinity Lutheran Church in Phoenix. "I'm doing what I am called to do," says trauma chaplain Phil Deming, who extends the church's ministry to patients and family members in hospital emergency rooms.

Synopsis: This story introduces viewers to three former Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) leaders -- Brian King, Sean McMillan and Dianah Ortega -- all now involved in exciting and vibrant forms of ministry. Ortega, who came to the United States from Mexico as a young girl, is an admissions counselor at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and helps young people make difficult choices related to education and careers. McMillan, a powerful preacher, represents the cutting edge of ELCA ministry with young African American males on the south side of Chicago. King, a former LYO president, is a pastor who works with Hmong children in his first call at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in LaCrosse, Wis.

Hyderabad streetSynopsis: This story focuses on building community in Hyderabad, India, following a series of ethnic riots. Viewers will meet Muhammad, a rickshaw puller, who struggles to feed and clothe his family, and learn how the Henry Martyn Institute, which receives ELCA funding, is working with Hindus and Muslims to foster understanding and cooperation.
