I. They Call Her the Lady Pastor
Synopsis: 1995 marked the 25th anniversary of ordaining women in the ELCA. It was a
celebration shared not only by over 1,600 ELCA women pastors, but by the whole church. In
recognition of this silver anniversary year, we took MOSAIC's cameras to the plains of
Montana and looked at the unusual everyday ministry of Pastor Julie Kanarr. While these
days it may not seem "politically correct," when the folks of Flaxville refer to
her as the "Lady Pastor" it is bestowed as a mantle of love and respect. We
think you'll also fall in love with Pastor Kanarr as she drives ministry miles in her
pickup truck, helps out on the farms, plays her trumpet in the high school pep band,
reflects on women's ordination and provides an outstanding example of pastoral ministry in
the ELCA.
III. Pastor Washington Talks to her Bishop
Synopsis: In early 1995 ELCA Presiding Bishop Herbert W. Chilstrom visited Pastor Maxine
Washington's Chicago congregation, and the two of them talked about his eight years as the
ELCA's first bishop. MOSAIC was there to listen as he reminisced about a church growing
up, the joys it has brought him, and his vision and hopes for its future.
III. Her Words Took Wing
Synopsis: MOSAIC unfolds the amazing story of an ELCA ground (or is it air?) breaking
journalist, pioneer aviator, educator and corporate spokesperson. She was literally our
cameraman's pilot for this interview as she takes you on wing from Canada to Mexico to the
pages of Life magazine and the ELCA New England Synod supplement to The Lutheran. Meet
Caroline Iverson Ackerman. She's one of a kind and, now in her 70s, very definitely a
woman of today!
