I. Educating with Namibia: A Dream Come True
Synopsis: ELCA higher education is making a dramatic impact in the country of Namibia. Not
long ago Namibia was a country wracked with civil war. Like neighboring South Africa,
Namibia was under the rule of apartheid. Black students were not permitted to attend col
lege there. At the ELCA's first churchwide assembly in 1988, a parade of Namibian students
sang and danced their way into the hearts of voting members. These young people were the
first wave of a program that brought 100 Namibian students to the U.S. to a ttend ELCA
colleges and universities. Now these students have returned to Namibia with degrees in
fields including engineering, political science and communication, and
Mosaic invites you
to meet a number of them and see what they are doing.
II. Ernie
and the Lean Green Crew
Synopsis: Partnership support from the ELCA's Division for Outreach is helping First
Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa, minister effectively in its changing neighborhood.
Mosaic focuses on this congregation's outreach to teenagers. When students from the public hig h school next to First Lutheran started smoking cigarettes in the church parking lot,
the congregation invited them in and listened to them. The result is a summer jobs program
that has the attention of everyone from school officials to the mayor of Water loo.
"If you have grass anywhere in your community, you can provide employment," says
Ernie Boykin, the congregation's youth and outreach minister. Mosaic takes you through a
fast-paced day of cleaning up the city with Boykin and the Lean Green Lawn Care crew.
