 Missionary
Covenant Program
(Beginning at $1,000)
Congregations, groups or individuals providing annual
contributions of $1,000 or more are enrolled in the Missionary Covenant Program. The
ELCA Global Mission welcomes congregations/groups cooperating with synods and
others in their area to provide full support for a missionary.
How to Get Started
- Once you have decided to sponsor a missionary in an annual
amount of between $1,000 and $84,000, and you have contacted ELCA Global Mission to enroll
in the program, the sponsorship office will suggest a missionary name to
the congregation.
- The desires of the sponsor, with respect
to an overseas area will be taken into consideration before an
assignment is made.
- After matching the missionary with a congregation, synod,
group or individual, ELCA Global Mission will send a picture of the missionary and other helpful
information to the sponsor and will notify the missionary about the sponsorship.
- Sponsors are expected to correspond with the missionary
and pray for them in worship and informal settings. Missionaries are also expected to
maintain regular contact with sponsors and visit them when they are in the United States
on home leave.
How to Remit Contributions
- Sponsors may remit their contributions annually,
semi-annually, quarterly, or monthly (preferred option).
- Missionary Sponsorship checks should be designated
"missionary sponsorship" and should be remitted with the name of the missionary
to your synod treasurer. This money will in turn be transmitted to the ELCA Office of the
Treasurer, where it is applied directly and totally to the designated missionary's
support.
- Individual sponsors may send their checks directly to ELCA,
P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764. Please designate the check "missionary
sponsorship" together with the name of the missionary.
