The population of Senegal is 9.7 million
in an area about the same size as South Dakota.
French is Senegal’s official language
of business and government. Senegal has many ethnic groups and each has
its own language, including Wolof, Pulaar, Diola and Mandingo.
Islam is the religion of more than 90
percent of Senegalese. Christians are about 1 percent.
Lutheran Mission Work in Senegal
Senegal is a relatively new area for the ELCA.
Missionaries began work there in the 1970s and Christian communities
started developing in the 1990s. The ELCA works in northern Senegal.
Since livestock is the basis for the
economy in this area, the ELCA provides veterinary services. If you can
help the people keep their herds healthy, then you help keep the people
healthy. So, this work is very important.
The ELCA has a very successful health
care program that the government uses as a model. It centers on
"health huts," latrines, clean water, nutrition, and healthy
mothers and children.
The Dakar Center in the capital city
Dakar is an exciting mission project which provided a library, study
space, recreation, social events, and classes in literacy, sewing and many
other topics. Twelve Senegalese work with several ELCA missionaries to
keep the center buzzing with activities. Approximately 800 young Muslims
each day make use of the Center. Students who lack needed textbooks, good
lighting or a place to study at home come to the Dakar Center to do their
homework.
