The Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC)
The
Multicultural Advisory Committee is an advisory committee to the
Board
of the Lutheran Youth Organization. The purpose of MAC is
to help the LYO strive to be more inclusive and to voice the concerns
and needs of youth of color and whose primary language is other than English.
Members of this committee are elected from
within their own ethnic constituencies at the MYLE event held every
three years alongside the ELCA Youth Gathering.
MAC is composed of one male and one
female from each of the following six ethnic communities: African American, Latino,
Asian American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Arab and Middle Eastern,
and Multiethnic (any of the aforementioned ethnicities plus white). They elect, from within this group, a chairperson and a secretary. The MAC meets
twice per year.

What is MYLE?
- MYLE is a richly Spirit-filled
and powerful time for people of all ethnic backgrounds across
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
- MYLE is one of the many places
where the ELCA is striving to become a fully multicultural and
anti-racist church.
- MYLE is a place to affirm and
deepen our understanding of cultural diversity. It is a
celebration, and a deepening, of the baptismal call to new life.
- MYLE is a place to develop
leaders for proclaiming and living out the gospel in ways that
speak to and through young people today growing up in a world in
which racial injustice still exists.
- MYLE equips people to articulate
how Christ is present in their lives, to listen to testimony of
sisters and brothers, and strengthen the skills they already
have to work for peace and justice in the world.
- MYLE is the sister ministry of
the ELCA Youth Gathering. The two events are specifically
designed to be experienced together and to bless each other.
- MYLE seeks to provide a space
for worship, ministry development, community building,
cross-cultural learning, and the empowerment of young people…
all centered in the context of being beloved children of God and
living in God’s amazing grace.
Who can attend MYLE?
- Young people from across the
church and the adults who support them and walk alongside in
faith with them—ready to engage in transformative ministry
together.
- Young people of color or whose
primary language is other than English who are part of ELCA
congregations across the US and the Caribbean are specially
invited. People who identify as white or Caucasian are welcome,
too, as this will be a unique opportunity to listen to people of
color (who make up less than 3% of total ELCA membership) and
engage in learning with the leaders of the new European American
ethnic association.
When and where will the 2009 MYLE
be?
- July 19-22, 2009 at the
Sheraton Hotel in downtown
New Orleans, LA.
