The Lutheran Church in Liberia joined the LWF in 1966 and has a membership of 71,196.
War robs citizens of their livelihoods, community and security. Since the civil war ended in 2003, the LWF has worked with victims of gender-based violence, especially among those living in camps for displaced persons. In that population, 40% of the children were abandoned or orphaned. Mainly young girls, they were vulnerable due to lack of economic power and support from relatives. LWF provided shelter, food, blankets, cooking utensils and hygiene kits for teenage girls.
The prevalence of violence has raised concern about the spread of HIV and AIDS. Medical workers and aid agencies identified the need to focus on protection. A specific LWF staff person was designated as a protection officer. Counseling, training and awareness workshops were conducted for traditional leaders, youth and women’s groups. About half of the girls who attended the workshops had been coping with violence in their daily lives. LWF will continue working toward safety and awareness for these young women.
