Eritrea
Girl's Education Benefits the
Whole Society
The Evangelical
Church of Eritrea joined the LWF in 1963 and has a membership of
12,000
In Eritrea, where
more than 60 percent of the population lives in poverty, poorer
families find it difficult to send their children to school.
Education is a basic human right, yet more than 25 percent of
Eritrean children do not attend school. For many cultural, social
and economic reasons, girls are more likely to be excluded from
education than boys, and the gap between girls’ an boys’
participation increases in the higher grades.
The LWF program
operates a project for improving girls’ participation and
performance in education. The project focuses on 2200 girl students
attending grade seven classes in 73 schools around the country.
The project
emphasizes the importance of education girls, and provides tutorial
classes in English and math. School committees of parents and
teachers identify girls who need extra help. The schools then
assign competent teachers for tutoring and role modeling. Stipends,
school uniforms and transportation tokens are provided.
The project has
had a significant impact. Enrollment of girls has risen, dropout
rates have fallen, and 85% of the girls graduate to the next grade.
