Refugee Resettlement
One of the things we do best is long term assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons. The LWF Department for World Service is the second largest resettlement partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. At any given time the LWF is providing assistance for over 400,000 refugees.

Stories for bulletins, newsletters or sermons:

  • HAITI

    • Rural life in Haiti is basic; a tin roof nailed to a simple wooden frame covers a single room that is separated into two rooms by a piece of cloth. A thatch-covered shed made of branches and built close to the house serves as a kitchen. Sometimes there is a latrine. There is no electricity. 75% of the Haitian population lives beneath the poverty line. The LWF has created micro-credit loans to assist rural women to purchase piglets. The direct results are: 1) More than 500 women have been beneficiaries; 2) 2000 piglets have been born and will multiply!; 3) ten women were trained by LWF in basic veterinary techniques; 5) a revolving fund makes possible the construction of pig pens and wheat bran to feed the pigs.

  • ZIMBABWE

    • This week, 3000 Zimbabweans will die of AIDS. Today in Zimbabwe over 780 thousand children are AIDS orphans. The churches struggle to educate their congregations about HIV/AIDS and the cultural context slows the fight against this disease. The LWF provides school fees and clothing for 402 orphans. In response to the food shortages experienced in the country, LWF supports orphans with food packs once every two months. The packs contain maize, beans and dried fish. 5243 people attended LWF AIDS workshops in the country last year.
Thank you! Together we do make a difference!
  • ANGOLA

    • There are over 10 million unexploded landmines in Angola, a county of 14 million. A growing child’s artificial limb must be replaced every 6-12 months. Up to 50% of landmine victims die within hours of the blast. Landmine infestation can deny access to safe drinking water, arable land and prevent mobile rural vaccination team from going on their rounds. Over the last 55 years, anti-personnel mines have caused more deaths and injuries than nuclear, biological and chemical weapons combined. Every 22 minutes someone somewhere around the world is killed or maimed by a landmine. The LWF works with mine-clearing teams that search square meter after square meter. The LWF participated in activities that resulted in a Nobel Peace Prize for work on eradication of landmines.
Thank you! Together we do make a difference!
  • CAMBODIA

    • Every 10 seconds a child dies because of disease linked to dirty water. Last year, 3.4 million people in the world died from diseases associated with an inadequate water supply. 1.4 billion children in the world have no access to clean water near their homes. In Cambodia, less than a quarter of rural households have safe drinking water. In this southeast Asian country, the LWF constructed 571 deep wells, 518 shallow wells, and created active water committees in 370 villages to educate the population about the need for clean water, monitor the water supply, and maintain the wells and pumps.
Thank you! Together we do make a difference!
