“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” writes John in his Gospel witness to the incarnate Christ (John1:9). Congregations throughout the world, such as St. John’s in Philadelphia (right), illuminate darkened sanctuaries at their traditional nighttime Christmas services. Organized in 1867 as St. Johannis Lutheran, St. John’s moved to Tyson and Hawthorne in 1946 to build a new facility. (ELCA Archives).
