Dr. Frank Laubach (1884-1970) was a man with a
global heart. His methodology for teaching reading and writing skills (summed up
as "each one teach one") was first developed in the Republic of the Philippines
and taught in more than 100 nations. In 1949 the Board of Foreign Missions
of the American Lutheran Church invited Dr. Laubach to teach in Papua New Guinea
(Lutheran Standard, July 2, 1949, pp. 4-5). Above, Dr. Laubach and an
interpreter teach literacy skills for speakers of the Azera language (also
spelled Adzera). Promoting
literacy has been an important tool in the development of nations, as well as a
way for Christians to make use of Scriptures translated into their own languages.
