USS Synod continues
accompaniment of LCL
The Upper Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA continues its faithful
accompaniment of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. In November of 2007,
it will send yet one more container of supplies for the LCL, and its
schools and health care ministries. This will be the synod’s 23rd
shipping container sent since 1991.
During January and February of 2007, the
synod sent its 7th team of volunteers for a six-week work
visit. This year there were four volunteers from the USS who left for
Liberia, on January 16th and returned home March 1st.
Ruth Koble from Sunbury
, Pa., Sandra Nelson from Trout Run, Pa., and F. Marlee Yant from
Springfield, MO, were based at the Lutheran Training Institute (LTI) in Lofa
County, assisting with adult literacy training.

A fourth USS volunteer, Frank Marano Jr.
from Mt. Laurel, NJ was joined by ELCA Global Mission volunteers Gary
Winters from Reinholds, PA, and Butch and Jim Foster, from Livingston,
MT, at Curran Hospital, heading up reconstruction efforts with a large
team of Liberian workers. The construction crew was able to build
trusses and roof the remaining unfinished part of the hospital (covering
the entire structure – 9,000 sq. feet – with metal roofing in 28 days),
and finish a separate 4-room short stay building.

The USS/LCL companion
synod committee meets regularly every two months to attend to the work
of accompanying the Lutheran Church in Liberia. The committee is in the
process of exploring with the LCL ways to strengthen congregation to
congregation linkages within the larger USS/LCL relationship.
