Phebe
rebuilds main hospital building
On Feb. 11, 2005,
Phebe Hospital Administrator David Jones reported that after a long day
of work by Phebe staff and volunteers, Phebe is now operating again out
of its main hospital building. With the exception of the Business
Office, all operations and patients are based in the newly-renovated
facility that was severely damaged and looted in 2003. There is also a
new Supplemental Feeding Unit in operation, set up in coordination with
the French NGO Action Contra le Faim (ACF).
A $250,000 grant made available through the Danish Evangelical Mission
(DEM) enabled the rehabilitation of the building. After an architectural
firm (a non-profit Christian company called
Architecture-Planning-Engineering-Supervision for Church-Sponsored
Projects in Africa and Asia (MSAADA)) drew up plans for the renovation –
including some much needed redesign – reconstruction begin in July 2004
and was officially finished in January 2005. Changes include improved
operating theaters, enlarged emergency room and waiting areas, and
significant use of windows and skylights to open up areas of the
hospital that were previously closed off to natural light.
