This national event, held every
year on the same Sunday as the NFL's Super Bowl, is
traditionally led by youth who stand at
sanctuary exits following worship services on that Sunday and
collect $1 and/or one can of food from each parishioner.
The money and food collected supports local, national, and international anti-hunger efforts.
The amount each congregation collects is reported that day to
the national Souper Bowl office by phone or online, and the
national total is
posted online as it grows.
Each congregation decides where and how
their collection is distributed. Many give to both a local
food pantry and the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

the Souper Bowl of Caring, including its history--and to sign up your youth or

**Check
www.souperbowl.org for an up-to-the-minute donations
total. The above totals
include the addition (beyond cash) of a monetary value of
$1 per can of food collected and will change throughout
the year as
money is collected and recorded.

In addition, below is a hymn for
Souper Bowl Sunday, written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette,
co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Pitman, N.J.
Gillette gives permission for congregations' local use of this
hymn (when credit is included). Cut and paste the hymn into your
worship bulletin.
God, You Give Us Recreation
A Hymn for Souper Bowl Sunday
(to the tune of "There's a Wideness in
God's Mercy" 8.7.8.7 D IN BABILONE)
God, you give us recreation, rest and
play when work is through,
Game and sport and celebration, times that challenge and renew.
In the days we spend together, in the feasts that we prepare,
In the times of joy and laughter, may we know your loving care.
Yet, O Lord, we see you crying for the
ones who know no rest,
For your children, hungry, dying, for the homeless and
oppressed.
May we, as your sons and daughters, share with open heart and
hand,
Till your justice flows like waters to the poor throughout the
land.
Bless, O Christ, our gifts of caring,
for we know without a doubt:
Soup and bread are made for sharing, hands are made for reaching
out.
Even in our times of playing, may we keep the vision clear:
Keep us serving, loving, praying, welcoming your kingdom here.
Based on:
Exodus 20:8, 34:21, 16:22-30;
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, 9:7-9; Deuteronomy 15:11;
Amos 5:24; Mark 6:34-44; Matthew 6:10
Tune:
Dutch Melody arranged by Julius Rontgen (1855-1933)

At
Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church in Bremerton, Washington,
parishioners mimic the spirit of the day with a
little "friendly competition.” The congregation is
evenly divided into two teams—Saints versus Angels.
Everyone is encouraged to bring non-perishable food
items and deposit them into appropriately labeled
receptacles in the narthex
(pictured here). The
team that collects the most food by weight is the
winner!
In 2006, the church collected over five
times as much as the previous year, which was the
inaugural competition. In 2005, they collected 203
pounds of food. In 2006, the amount rose to
1,122 pounds,
over half a ton! The Saints won with 576 pounds to
the Angels’ 546 pounds, but the real winner was the
Bremerton Foodline, the local food bank that
receives the food.

Here’s how
Trinity Lutheran Church, Roanoke, VA,
participated in the Souper Bowl one year:
About three weeks before Souper Bowl
Sunday, posters were hung in high-traffic areas of the church.
On the day of the Souper Bowl, members of the congregation’s
hunger committee stood at exits after worship to collect
donations. Everyone was invited to a light luncheon
sponsored by the hunger committee to thank members for their
support the previous year.
The
previous year, $250 was collected, so a goal of $300 was set
this time. The goal was exceeded when almost $500 came
in. The money was donated to a local Meals on Wheels
program.
The following Sunday, an invited guest
from Meals on Wheels spoke to the congregation. She
received the check in a presentation at the beginning of
worship. During the children’s sermon, the pastor asked
the children if they would like to take up a “noisy offering” in
soup bowls that he had for them to use. The children collected
$66.47 more for Meals on Wheels. |
