At King of
Kings Lutheran Church, Pueblo, CO,
60 families pledged $12,330 to the World Hunger Appeal and Stand
With Africa in one year. The congregation responded to the
challenge raised by Bishop Bjornberg to give $10 per month per
family to the Appeal. The
Indiana-Kentucky Synod
holds “Mission Moments” during short breaks in the assembly.
These are limited to 60 seconds and offer a change to concisely
bring a point before the assembly.
In 1999, for the 25th anniversary of
the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, the
Grand Canyon Synod created KIDbean
soup to make members more aware that there are many people who
go to bed hungry each night. Each bag of KIDbean soup,
containing 8 servings, costs $1.25 and comes with an explanation
of how it can be used in various ways in congregations. Families
were encouraged to contribute the amount they would spend on a
“normal” meal and dine on KIDbean soup instead.
To help the ELCA World Hunger
Appeal reach its goal of raising $25 million annually by 2005
($5 per baptized member), the
Central/Southern Illinois Synod
has a campaign called "Give an Abraham" to encourage each of its
members to give their share toward that goal. Every baptized
member of the synod is asked to give $5 - the "Abraham Lincoln
bill" - to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. The synod's assembly in
2002 featured a specially written skit to present the campaign
(repeated in 2003). The skit began with a marching kazoo band
playing the "Give an Abraham" ("Father Abraham") tune. The synod
(which includes Springfield, IL, Abraham Lincoln's old home)
supplied each congregation with a packet of refrigerator
magnets, buttons and information, as well as a script of the
skit adapted for congregations.
In
your synod or congregation, you can adapt this idea that the
Upstate New York
Synod
started as a tradition at its synod assembly:
The synod presented the first annual
“weightlifting award” to the congregation that raised the most
per capita funds in 2001. The synod had a weightlifting trophy
made, which will be passed to the congregation raising the most
funds next year. The certificate presented with the trophy read:
“With Thanksgiving to God for St. Timothy, North Greenbush, for
lifting the weight of poverty from people around the world by
contributing $9,344 in 2001, the synod’s largest world hunger
contribution (per confirmed member).”
In addition to encouraging giving
to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal with the “weightlifting award”
(see above), the Upstate New York
Synod held its third annual
synod-wide fund-raising event, “Head off Hunger.” The synod
asked people to contribute the amount they spend on hair
care—cut, permanent, color, replacement, hair-care products,
etc. As of mid-June, the synod had collected more than $28,000!
