Birthday Gifts

Evelyn wanted to give a gift of money to the World Hunger Appeal in honor of her grandson Nathan’s 8th birthday. When she approached him with the idea, he agreed that it was something he wanted to be part of. So, instead of a toy or other material gift, Nathan received a card that said his grandmother had made a donation to help hungry people in his honor.

Nathan was proud of the birthday gift his grandmother had given him. When his birthday came the next year, his grandmother didn’t even have to ask what he wanted. He told her that she should give him the same gift – helping someone else.

257 members of Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D., who celebrated birthdays gave World Hunger Appeal gifts equal to their age. While children brought coins for the number of years since their birth, one 82-year-old member donated $82. Grand total: $1,030.

Clemens Torgerson, from Bottineau, N.D., gave $900 to the World Hunger Appeal on the occasion of “celebrating my 90th birthday, 9/12/99.”

For her fifth birthday in July 2002, the parents of Heidi Nassos, Wheaton, IL, threw her a Hawaiian-theme luau.

The invitations read:

"No gifts please! Heidi would like to help the poor children in the world by having her friends donate money to the Hope for the Children Fund [of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal]. Please choose from the following:

  • $2 provides a visit by a healthcare worker in Bangladesh
  • $7-10 feeds an AIDS orphan in Zimbabwe or Tanzania for a week
  • $8-10 feeds a baby for a month in a refugee camp
  • $15 pays for “oral re-hydration” treatments to save the lives of 150 children

Please make checks payable to ELCA World Hunger Appeal and designate to which fund you want your donation to be directed."

>The information on the dollar amounts and what they can buy is from the ELCA World Hunger Appeal’s Alternative Giving Ideas Catalog (ISBN 6-0001-6900-0).  The entire text of the catalog, with ready-to-use greeting card inserts to announce your gift to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal in the name of the person you’re honoring, is online.

Grace Koontz, a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, N.C., has always been concerned about world hunger and has spent much time and love feeding those near to her with homemade candy, cookies, and canned goods.

So for her 100th birthday celebration on Jan. 19, 2003, her granddaughter, Beth Kearney, thought something related to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal would touch “Granny” and connect with the family.

Learning that $1 feeds an orphan or street child for a day in many countries, Koontz’s family gave her a special birthday gift—the gift of children being fed in her name. The family made paper dolls to represent children who were being fed for a month. Koontz’s great-grandchildren helped with a presentation during the announcements at her church one Sunday. They raised $2,100 in her honor.
