At its 2002 synod
assembly, the South Dakota Synod passed a resolution to increase
giving by pastors and others to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.
The
resolution read in part: “…be it resolved that the South Dakota
Synod, ELCA implement the ‘10 for 10 Project’ for the ELCA World
Hunger Appeal, which urges all pastors in the synod to give $10
per month through the congregations they serve to the ELCA World
Hunger Appeal and to encourage at least ten individuals in each
congregation to make the same commitment.”
To support the “10 for 10 Project,”
hunger leaders in the synod created and arranged the
distribution to every congregation in the synod a poster and
master for bulletin inserts to help congregations fulfill the
resolution. With these materials were a copy of the resolution
and contact information for any questions congregations had.
The bulletin inserts,
designed for individual members, explained the project and gave
facts about the size of the synod (number of congregations,
members and pastors), total giving to the World Hunger Appeal as
a synod and the average giving per member in the previous year.
Then the challenge for each pastor and 10 additional members to
give $10 per month was presented. “We are hoping for 100%
participation by both the pastors and the congregations of the
SD Synod,” the bulletin insert read.
The poster (pictured above) had an illustration of a tree on it
with the instructions to the congregation: “Please color in a
leaf on the giving tree for each month for each person who gives
$10 to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and watch our mission grow.” |
