Hunger Jeopardy

Purpose:

Let's play Hunger Jeopardy! To educate Lutherans and others about ELCA World Hunger and its work. When information is given in a fun atmosphere, it is more likely to be retained. This, however, is not intended to make light of or underscore the seriousness of world hunger. Armed with knowledge and awareness, the hope is that participants of this game will leave with a better understanding that there are people who are hungry in God’s world and there are ways we can support them.

This game works well with teenagers, adults, or both (as an intergenerational activity). Perhaps your group/congregation will consider raising money for a donation to ELCA World Hunger equal to the winning team’s score.

NOTE: Only the directions for setting up and playing this game are contained on this page.  You will need to print the Adobe PDF file to get the question and answer cards.  This file also includes the directions on this page.

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download this free software.

Directions to create game:

On a 36-inch (approximately) square of white felt or other material, draw the game boxes--five across and five down. You may wish to leave an open space at the top where you can write the name of the game.

Print the accompanying pages, ideally on heavier card stock paper (or you could laminate the cards). Then, cut along the dashed lines to form individual cards. If you copy pages back-to-back, matching each category with its accompanying questions/answers, you’ll have each question and answer front-to-back when you cut them out. The order doesn’t matter, unless like the real Jeopardy you wish to match “harder” answers with higher dollar values.

If attaching velcro is not an option due to the text on the back of the cards, perhaps you can use thumb/fun tack. Or if you have enough time, you could create pouches for each slot (by taping pieces of paper to the board which are larger than the question cards, leaving each open on top to insert the cards). A third option, though it wears out the cards quickly, is to use pins.

Seven categories of questions are provided. Choose five to use for the game, or develop a wider game board if you wish to use all seven categories/columns for one game.

Hunger Jeopardy (sample layout)

Plants and Animals Lutheran Aid Economy Odds and Ends Food and Medicine
$100 $100 $100 $100 $100
$200 $200 $200 $200 $200
$300 $300 $300 $300 $300
$400 $400 $400 $400 $400
$500 $500 $500 $500 $500

Playing the game:

The game is played the same way as Jeopardy on television. Divide players into two or three teams. Without the use of buzzers, you will need to determine the order of play and have teams take turns, making sure all teams receive the same number of questions. If a team answers a question correctly, give that team the card to keep with the dollar amount. After all questions are gone or a certain number of rounds has been completed, tally up each team’s dollar amount to see who is the winner. For added suspense, you may wish to have a separate chalk or marker board (or easel with paper) to add up the scores as you go along.

Thank you

If your group learns something from this game and then actively does something for people who are hungry (makes a donation or does a service project in your community), then the real winners are people whose lives you affect by doing so.
