The ELCA
Domestic Hunger Program is part of the ELCA World
Hunger Program, and both are coordinated by the Program Unit for
Church in Society. The Community Development Services Program in
the Program Unit for Church in Society provides administrative
coordination for the ELCA domestic hunger grants process.
The domestic hunger grants process follows this cycle:

In addition to Church in Society staff serving under the
Domestic Hunger Program, there are a number of representatives
from other units in the ELCA churchwide offices who participate
in the grants screening and allocation process, including the
Program Units for Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission, Multicultural Ministries,
and Women of the ELCA.
Over a dozen churchwide representatives from
these units and one representative from
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service in Baltimore, MD,
form the grants committee, which meets in March to read and
review each application carefully. The committee makes
recommendations for funding in conjunction with each synod’s
prioritization of grants submitted within the synod and its
comments about each applicant. The committee agrees on which
proposals to fund and the amount of each grant, and checks are
then mailed to grant recipients in April.
