Designed for ELCA young adults up to age 30 and with at least one year post-high school experience, this program provides a one-year service opportunity in leadership development, service, spiritual growth, global awareness and understanding. Up to 52 positions are available for 2008-09. Service begins mid-August.

One year international opportunities
Argentina
& Uruguay
In Argentina and Uruguay, you would work with projects in a variety of churches and social service agencies - youth, children, homeless. Community development, reconciliation, and evangelism are other areas in which you gain experience, understanding and share their gifts.
Germany The Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr, or Volunteer Service Year, is administered by the Protestant Church in Germany. You would work in church-based or institutional-based service projects.
Jerusalem/
West Bank
Participate in the ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land, which includes many possible positions related to parish work and educational centers in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Malaysia Young adults will serve in ministries of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia (Lutheran) as tutors for immigrant children, ESL teachers and tutors for seminary students, kindergarten assistants and youth groups. Opportunities abound for intercultural and interfaith learning and reflection. Located in the beautiful state of Sabah where English is widely spoken, this is a new program for 2009-2010. Mexico

The program in Mexico places volunteers at various sites in and near Cuernavaca, near Mexico City with  opportunities to work with organizations dedicated to education, development, and justice.

Slovakia The Slovakia program is managed by the Ecumenical Council of Churches in the Slovak Republic. You can be placed in diaconal centers and churches throughout Slovakia in a wide variety of social and congregational settings.
South Africa The South Africa program is new for 2008. You will be offered service opportunities in a variety of settings from youth ministries, advocacy and development work, HIV & AIDS ministries, and care for the elderly and vulnerable orphans. Placements may be with church or community-based programs in rural or urban sites.
United Kingdom You are placed in Great Britain with the ecumenical organization, Time for God. Placements include working with homeless, abused or elderly persons, helping with youth clubs or community groups, or serving in church youth or music ministries.
Important Info
  • For ELCA members who have demonstrated involvement and leadership in church or campus ministries, ages 19-30; age varies according to site
  • You apply to the program, but you can list a country preference
  • Selected candidates come to Chicago for a discernment weekend, April 16-19, 2009, to determine site and assignment
  • Term of service begins mid-August 2009 with an 8-day U.S. orientation
  • Volunteers raise at least $4,000 toward participant support
  • Travel, lodging, board, and weekly allowance provided
  • Work in supervised setting
  • Medical insurance provided
  • Student loans may be deferred
