Application, Evaluation and Deployment Process

For Japan Program (J-3) Personnel

  • Candidate submits application by March 15.
  • ELCA Global Mission staff requests recommendations
  • ELCA Global Mission staff reviews application, recommendations and gets to know candidate
  • Candidate comes to ELCA Global Mission office in Chicago for a day of interview and mutual discernment
  • ELCA Global Mission staff meets after the interview/discernment day to decide if there is a match and if a position will be offered.
  • ELCA Global Mission staff contact candidate to share if the position will be offered.
  • Candidates who are offered a position respond in writing to accept or decline the position.
  • ELCA Global Mission Staff conducts background check for newly appointed mission personnel
  • ELCA Global Mission Staff works with candidate to arrange a psychological evaluation
  • Newly appointed mission personnel is in deployment (preparation for departure) and works with ELCA Global Mission staff to complete necessary documents.
  • Orientation and ESL instruction for new mission personnel in Chicago area for the month of July.
  • Depart for service in late summer or early autumn (August or September).
  • First six months of service are Japanese language study and in country orientation in Japan.
