Mission through Leadership Development

Several international scholarship programs can be accessed through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

ELCA International Scholarships

ELCA Global Mission is in companionship with many Lutheran churches ("companion churches") around the world. The goal of ELCA Global Mission is to enable their church leaders to obtain advanced training in areas of work in which the church is engaged (theology, health care, development, etc.) not available in their home countries. After their studies are complete and degrees are earned, the scholarship recipient returns home to work in a position designated by the companion church. This process cannot be done without much sacrifice on the part of the student, the student's family, and the home church.

The companion church determines its needs and then, in turn, who receives an application. After endorsing their candidate, the application is forwarded to the ELCA Global Mission International Scholarship Office for further processing. Specific scholarship requirements are:

Applicants must be active members of a church or institution that is in companion relationship with the ELCA.

Scholarships are normally not given to undergraduate or first level graduate degrees. ELCA Global Mission International Scholarships are normally for advanced graduate level programs in the area of theology or other church-related fields not available in the applicant's home country.

Scholarships are not given to citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.

Scholarship recipients are required to return to their home country after their studies to work in a position designated by the companion church.

For further information or questions regarding scholarship assistance, please contact the Lutheran church in your home country. All applications must come through one's home church and cannot be made directly to the ELCA Global Mission.

EKD Stipends (coordinated through the ELCA Wittenberg Center; for ELCA members only)

In order to provide an opportunity for ecumenical encounter and support advanced training and qualification, the church office of the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) annually offers up to two stipends for ELCA clergy, interns, rostered professionals and laity. These stipends are granted for studies within Germany for a three-month period.

The goal of the EKD in offering this stipend program is to strengthen ecumenical ties and to offer lay and rostered ELCA members the chance to enrich their own ministries and institutions through exposure to the resources of the German churches. Past stipend recipients have used this
opportunity for dissertation research, pastoral and academic sabbatical projects and teaching, as well as various forms of immersion into the language, culture and religious life of Germany.

Applicants must be active ELCA members and must receive endorsement from the bishop of the synod in which their membership lies.

Stipends must be used for the purchase of academic materials, program registration fees, living expenses in Germany, travel costs and other related expenses. The EKD stipend includes airfare to and from Germany as well as a monthly stipend of approximately 970 euros to cover living expenses in Germany. A modest supplement is available for an accompanying spouse who engages in a program of learning.

A clear program proposal must be made, which indicates the program's objectives, together with an explanation of how the program will benefit the applicant's ministry, position, or the church at large.

Specific questions can be addressed to the ELCA Wittenberg Center. Application forms can be requested from ELCA Global Mission.
