Online Learning for First Call Theological Education
Learning takes many forms and
happens in a myriad of ways, from formal to informal, from
teacher-directed to self-directed, from structured to
unstructured, from classroom to experiential learning contexts.
A more recent form uses electronic, online delivery of material
to individuals or groups. This kind of online, distance learning
is often supported by an online teacher or mentor who posts
assignments and responds online to participants’ questions and
comments. As part of a
Lilly Endowment grant, Transition
into Ministry, the Vocation and Education unit is working with
other partners to create practical and stimulating online courses
and resource materials. These learning opportunities have been
developed with an eye on the challenges and contexts of clergy and
lay leaders in their first call to public ministry. But it has
become clear through pilot testing of these programs that other
leaders and church members could also benefit by participating in
this learning. “The
Whys and Hows of Money Leadership” is a curriculum for those
who want to work toward deeper understanding of their own
perspectives on money management as well as congregational
economics. The seven-lesson curriculum can be used by individuals
as well as groups. Efforts are underway to reshape the course for
use by groups with interactive components and online mentors.
An “Invitation
to a Closer Relationship with God” has been a popular course
for face-to-face learning groups and has been recently redesigned
for online use. Presently, Associates in Ministry are pilot
testing this interactive online course. When this is completed
(projected for Spring 2004), the course will be made available to
others. A course to help
rostered clergy and lay leaders read their ministry context is in
the process of being developed (projected for Fall 2004).
A course (with video materials) to
help pastors in sermon formation by engaging lay members in
exegetical understanding of pericope texts is also being developed
(projected for Summer 2004).
A “Handbook for Getting Started in a First Call” is being
developed and will be offered online (projected for late Spring
2004).
