First Call Theological Education Book Reviews

The following books have been reviewed in Lutheran Partners, the bi-monthly magazine of clergy and rostered lay persons serving in the public ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

  • Medieval Children by Nicholas Orme >>>
  • Pastoral Care for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing the Shattered Souls by Dalene C. Fuller Rogers >>>
  • To Live in Peace: Biblical Faith and the Changing Inner City by Mark R. Gornik >>>

Medieval Children by Nicholas Orme
Snapshots of the past help us picture the present. This is why I am attracted to books like Medieval Children by Nicholas Orme (Yale University Press, 2001, $39.95). This is a history of children in England from Anglo-Saxon times to the 16th century.

Of particular interest is the 37-page section on children and the church. A quote: "The Church admitted all to its membership on the first day of their lives, through baptism. As they grew up it gave them teaching, provided by its clergy and by godparents and parents. In return, every child promised through its godparents at baptism, to do the church's bidding for the rest of its life. This promise affected how children behaved and what they believed" (p. 200).

This colorfully illustrated book also has sections on areas such as family life, danger and death, play, and learning to read.

Pastoral Care for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing the Shattered Souls by Dalene C. Fuller Rogers
We look at life differently in 2003, but we still have gossip, misinformation, wars and of war, natural disasters, and a variety of stressful events and feelings. For help in helping others, read Pastoral Care for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing the Shattered Souls by Dalene C. Fuller Rogers (Haworth Pastoral Press, 2002, $19.95).

This comprehensive, helpful resource addresses the spiritual and theological issues that usually accompany PTSD. The book provides ways to support people through the healing process while maintaining their spiritual grounding. This is a practical, understandable, professionally presented, and researched working guide for parish clergy, chaplains, seminarians, and for those who have little or no knowledge of how to help people suffering from PTSD.

To Live in Peace: Biblical Faith and the Changing Inner City by Mark R. Gornik
Communities can also be distressed. For help, consider To Live in Peace: Biblical Faith and the Changing Inner City by Mark R. Gornik (Eerdmans, 2002, $21). This book responds to the question "How are Christians to understand and respond to our distressed inner city communities?"

Author Gornik centers his theologically based book on the story of Baltimore's New Song Community Church and how it stands as a witness to what positive results can happen when the risks of the gospel are taken.
