Quilts, Kits and Layettes needed!

Women of the ELCA is encouraging its local groups and other groups in congregations to engage in Lutheran World Relief's parish projects. "Last year showed a significant increase in the number of quilts requested ... In 2008, requests have increased even further ... so our current inventories are not able to meet the needs expressed by our overseas partners. We'll need many more quilts and kits to fulfill the requests we've received already, plus the other requests that are sure to come," according to LWR's warehouse manager. (04/25/08)

... make disciples of all nations ... (Matthew 28:19)

As we reach out to new communities and the unchurched, we need to ground our members in the Bible and the most basic truths of our Lutheran heritage in order that we can energize all to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with neighbors and to live out their Christian calling to the world. We work to nurture key faith practices as people of all ages grow in their desire and commitment to follow Jesus – discipleship.  (04/15/08)

Spring is a season of renewal...

... in the church and out of it. When was the last time you looked at the ELCA Evangelism Strategy to see how your congregation's doing, and how you, too, are called by God in Baptism and empowered by the Holy Spirit to call the Church to prayer, prepare and renew evangelical leaders, teach discipleship, and start and renew congregations? Spring might be a good time to renew our intentions in all these regards. (04/03/08)

Real Hope for Real Life

080208Presiding Bishop's message on the crisis in Kenya

Since the end of December serious ethnic conflict and violence in Kenya has caused hundreds of thousands of Kenyan children, women and men to flee their homes and over 1,000 to be killed. Bishop Hanson is asking all ELCA members to pray for peace and reconciliation, for the church in Kenya, its leaders, for those who have lost loved ones to the violence, for those who are displaced, and for our mission personnel who continue to serve in Kenya. You can also help by contributing to physical relief for displaced people. (2/8/08)

What do you do during Lent?

During Lent, many people "give up" things – fast from certain foods or on certain days, for instance. Many others add disciplines related to Bible reading, prayer and acts of charity to their daily routines. It's easy to subscribe to daily Bible readings or to Prayer Ventures – daily prayers for ELCA ministers and ministries. Look to your congregation or nearby Lutheran social ministry agency for service opportunities.

Order Eco-Palms by February 20

In Guatemala and Mexico, a new palm-harvesting process protects the environment and also provides a fair income for the harvesters.  Called eco-palms, the palms are harvested in a sustainable way, the harvesters are paid on the quality of the palms and package and ship their palms directly rather than relying on middlemen -- ensuring that more of the money paid for the palms actually goes to those who worked the hardest to provide them.

Jesus said, "Go ... and make disciples ..."

These words from Matthew 28:19 are the "Great Commission" Jesus left as he ascended into heaven after the Resurrection. It is what impels the ELCA to provide resources for people to grow in discipleship through personal or group daily devotions, through Christian education programs in their congregations and through family resources, such as the Family Discipleship Calendar."
