Sharing Your Faith: Who and What?

Have you ever been asked about yourself, only to respond by describing what you do? We seldom talk about who we are. It is easier for us to talk about what we are in our world of work. We are pastors, teachers, church leaders, counselors, laborers-some part-time and others fulltime.

How comfortable are you talking about your role as a Christian? When we are baptized, we hear the words, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." Rather than what or who, the baptismal service reminds us of whose we are. When we remember we belong to God, we connect to a whole history of marvelous ways our God has helped and guided us through life.

How we share our faith with others reflects both what and who we are.

When Joe told about his experience at work and how he prayed for the Holy Spirit's gift of patience, he described what God did through him as he dealt kindly with a very difficult co-worker.

When Betty shared about the Holy Spirit's guidance and protection while she was driving in a blinding snowstorm, she witnessed who was her help in times of trouble.

When Dan humbly shared about the miracle of healing from a serious illness and the power of prayer, he boldly confessed he belonged to God.

The manner in which we feel comfortable sharing our faith varies with our unique God-given gifts. For some, a one-to-one friendship is the most comfortable time to share their faith. Others are gifted in writing about their experiences, while some enjoy speaking to small and large groups about what God has done.

How can we become better at faith sharing?

• Pray for an opportunity to share your faith.
• Make a covenant with someone to meet and mentor each other in the faith.
• Begin a journal to write your thoughts about what God is doing in your life.
• Join a small group to grow in your faith sharing.

Lutherans are capable of sharing their faith! Who needs to hear about your faith?
