Effective Evangelical Congregations
(from ELCA Evangelism Strategy, page 16)
Research indicates that growing, vital and missional congregations
demonstrate common standards of excellence.
Effective evangelical congregations:
- have a clear vision of God’s mission, focused on Jesus Christ and his commission to
reach out to those outside the Church.
- are centered on Jesus Christ; the congregation seeks to make disciples in his name.
- are deeply involved in Bible study and prayer.
- have inspiring worship that is connected to the needs and resources of the people in the
community and in the congregation.
- empower their lay leaders to use their spiritual gifts for the sake of the mission.
- invite, welcome and integrate newcomers effectively.
- engage the needs of the community and world in which they live, and shape their
witness and service to fit those needs.
- have courageous, passionate, and contextual leaders who see themselves as witnesses to
Jesus Christ.
- are able to deal openly and productively with change and conflict.
- recognize the need for joy, love, and community in those around them.
- actively reach out to children and youth in their communities.
- work for justice and community transformation.
