The
Decade to Overcome Violence
Churches
Seeking Reconciliation and Peace
2001 – 2010 (DOV)
In
1981
the United Nations General Assembly
passed a resolution declaring an
International Day of Peace. In 2001,
the United Nations General Assembly
adopted a new resolution declaring September
21 of each year
as the International Day of Peace.
The intention of the resolution is
to have the entire world observe a
day of peace and
nonviolence. Secretary-General Kofi
Annan asked all United Nations
departments and agencies to expand
their observance this year,
extending a special invitation to
civil society.
The
International Day of Peace
This year,
the Day of Peace follows the many ways in which the
United Nations works
for peace and encourages individuals, groups and
communities around the world to
communicate thoughts and activities on how to
achieve peace

WCC member churches worldwide
are once more invited to pray
for peace on September 21, 2007
or the closest Sunday. The idea
for a day of prayer for peace was proposed
in 2004 during a meeting between WCC general secretary Rev. Dr
Samuel Kobia and UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan (press
release), and coincides with
the UN International Day of
Peace. The Day of Prayer is one
of the initiatives of the WCC's
Decade to Overcome Violence.
Congregations worldwide are
invited to pray for peace -
possibly using the same prayers
- in all participating churches
on September 21 or the Sunday
preceding or following it.

Presiding Bishop Responds to Vatican Statement on Nature of
the Church
"As Lutherans we uphold the Augsburg Confession,
which states that, “The Church is the assembly
of saints in which the Gospel is taught and the sacraments
are administered rightly” (AC
VII). Therefore, although our witness is wounded by the
division that exists among
Christians, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
recognizes no deficiency in our self understanding as
“Church.”

National Council
of Churches of Christ (NCCC)
NCC's Faith & Order eyes
Vatican statement
The
Vatican statement on the doctrine on the church provides
another historical context for the 50th anniversary
conference of the National Council of Churches Faith and
Order Commission July 19-23 in Oberlin, Ohio. The Vatican
statement, released July 10, asserted that the Catholic
Church is the one, true church, even if elements of truth
can be found in separated churches and communities, such as
Protestant and Orthodox churches.

The Faith and Order Commission of
the National Council of Churches USA will celebrate its
fiftieth anniversary July 19-23, 2007, by returning to
Oberlin, Ohio, for a conference titled, "On Being Christian
Together: The Faith and Order Experience in the United
States." The celebration will consider where Faith and Order
has been, its current gifts, and its future life. The
meeting will both celebrate the achievements of Faith and
Order in the United States and explore the ecumenical
significance of Oberlin as a place, combining repentance for
continuing disunity with joyful worship in response to the
unity the churches already experience in Jesus Christ.

The LERN
network is a group of ELCA clergy and laypeople
appointed by their synodical bishops throughout the ELCA.
They are the eyes and ears of ecumenism in their synods. LERN reps meet annually at the
National Workshop on Christian Unity and with staff
members of the ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious
Relations Office. These representatives and the LERN Executive
Committee meet the challenge of the ELCA’s
strategic directions to authentically “step forward as a
public church, support congregations, assist synods, produce
wise and courageous leaders, and deepen and extend our...
ecumenical relationships.”
