ELCA Ecumenical Journey, March 13-29,
2006: Members of the ELCA traveled on an Ecumenical
Journey and
gained new insights into
the global ecumenical world. This opportunity included visits
to Geneva, Switzerland where meetings took place with
officials of the Lutheran World Federation, the World Council
of Churches, and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. All
of these organizations are housed in the Ecumenical Centre in
Geneva. The second stop was Istanbul, Turkey with a visit to
His All Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I. This is a city of contrasts,
where Christians are a small minority of the population. Next
on the itinerary is Rome where the ELCA delegation had
meetings with officials of the Pontifical Council for
Promoting Christian Unity and the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith and a general audience with His Holiness
Pope Benedict XVI. The trip concluded with a visit to London
and meetings with officials of The Church of England and the
Anglican Consultative Council (the Anglican equivalent of the
Lutheran World Federation). View the
gallery of photos.
Relationships between Lutherans and
Roman Catholics in the world remain strong. Pope
Benedict XVI travels to Poland May 25-28, 2006. One of his
first actions is to participate in an
Ecumenical Vespers
service at the Lutheran Church of the Most Holy Trinity
in Warsaw on May 25. View the
Apostolic Journey of his Holiness Benedict XVI in the
Vatican Press Service. |

The LERN
network is a group of ELCA clergy and laypeople
appointed by their synodical bishops throughout the ELCA.
They are the eyes and ears of ecumenism in their synods. LERN reps meet annually at the
National Workshop on Christian Unity and with staff
members of the ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious
Relations. These representatives and the LERN Executive
Committee meet the challenge of the ELCA’s
strategic directions to authentically “step forward as a
public church, support congregations, assist synods, produce
wise and courageous leaders, and deepen and extend our...
ecumenical relationships.”
