Called to be the One Church - The World Council of Churches gives priority to spirituality, ecumenical formation, global justice and prophetic witness. Agreeing on a new text, “Called to be the One Church,” the 9th Assembly urged the WCC and its member churches to give priority to the questions of unity, catholicity, baptism and prayer. "Religions and Cultures: the Courage of Dialogue" is the theme for the International Prayer for Peace in Washington D.C on April 26-27, 2006.

Sponsors include the Archdiocese of Washington and Georgetown University, held for the first time in the United States.  Planned topics include -- Interreligious Dialogue, Prayers as a Source of Peace, Religions facing Terrorism in the Post 9/11 World, the Middle East, Islam in America and  more. 2006 Ecumenical Seminary Essay Contest Winning Essay: Mr. Paul Bailie, a seminary student from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago has been chosen as the winner of this contest. He will be presenting his essay  "Sitting at the Table together: Ecumenism and the Future of Christian Togetherness" at the National Workshop on Christian Unity in San Jose, California.

College-Age Lutherans Head to U.S. Gulf Coast for Spring Break  CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Some Lutheran college students will spend spring break in the U.S. Gulf Coast cleaning out homes, tearing down drywall and bleaching moldy walls in an effort to rebuild homes damaged during the 2005 hurricane season. Come to the Feast! - The Ecumenical Young Adult Ministry Team of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA is sponsoring Come to the Feast, a biennial gathering of young adults to seek, connect, empower and strengthen young adult ministries beyond denominational lines. The conference is divided into two parts (Part I, May 24-26, and Part II, May 26-29) and will focus on four areas of interest: Mobilizing, Renewing, Building Community and Expressing Faith.  Registration forms are available online. Lutheran heroine's story told in award winning new film - Zeitgeist Films presents Sophie Scholl: the Final Days, the dramatic story of Germany's famous anti-Nazi heroine.  Sophie, her brother Hans, and Christopher Probst were a part of the underground group of college students known as the "White Rose" when they were arrested by the Gestapo.  Facing death, Sophie's belief in God gave her the strength to resist the Nazis.  This is a great film for congregations to see and discuss together!  For show dates and locations click here.

What is a Conciliar Body?
National Council of Churches of Christ (NCCC) - Panels of Canadian and US councils of churches begin planning a 2007 biotechnologies conference: An international biotechnology conference is planned for Fall 2007.  The conference includes Anglican, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox traditions. Inter-Religious Relations

Encountering the Other: Religious Arguments of Tolerance - Guided by the theme of hospitality toward the other this event is a one-day workshop April 24 at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana.  This conference principally aims at focusing dialogue among people of the three Abrahamic faith traditions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - but is also open to papers and presenters dealing with encounters with other faith traditions.

The 10th annual Islam in America Conference will be held  by  the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) April 14-16 in Chicago, IL.  The following topics are featured as special areas of focus: Interfaith Initiatives in America, Leadership Development, Understanding Moderate and Extremist Approaches in Islam, The Experience of Islam in American Prisons, Conflict Resolution/Peace building in Muslim Communities, Social Service Models in America, Current Youth Trends. Running concurrent with this conference is the 7th annual ISNA Education Forum.  Check this link for registration information for both conferences.
"Jewish Mysticism: Kabbalah for the Curious" - The Metro Chicago Synod of the ELCA and members of the American Jewish Committee are sponsoring their 17th annual Jewish-Christian clergy retreat from noon April 26 to noon April 27.  Rabbi Dr. Bryon L. Sherwin, an internationally renowned scholar of Jewish mysticism and philosophy, will be the keynote speaker. The Asia Foundation is offering a study tour on "Religion and Society in Southwest Asia" for young Professionals from April 21 to May 6, 2006.  The program will take place in Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and concluding in San Francisco. Read more about this unique program!

Religions for Peace announces new Millenium Development Goals toolkit for Religious Leaders and Communities. This multi-religious resource should be available in Spring 2006.

The United States Institute for Peace has released a new report  entitled: "The Diversity of Muslims in the United States: Views as Americans". Read more in the Religious for Peace USA March E-newsletter.

Lutheran Ecumenical Representatives Network (LERN)

The LERN network is a group of ELCA clergy and laypeople appointed by their synodical bishops throughout the ELCA.  They are the eyes and ears of ecumenism in their synods.  LERN reps meet annually at the National Workshop on Christian Unity and with staff members of the ELCA  Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations. These representatives and the LERN Executive Committee meet the challenge of the ELCA’s strategic directions to authentically “step forward as a public church, support congregations, assist synods, produce wise and courageous leaders, and deepen and extend our... ecumenical relationships.”
