2006 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - January 18-25 marks the 2006 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity throughout the world.  The theme is Matthew 18:15-22, "Where Two or Three are Gathered in My Name . . . "  Visit these links!
2006 National Workshop on Christian Unity, San José, California - The workshop is sponsored by the National Association of Ecumenical officers and will be held from May 8-11, 2006.  There are both denominational and ecumenical sessions during the workshop. NEW ELCA Synods and UMC Conferences engage in Interim Eucharistic Sharing:

  • On January 8, Bishop John Hopkins of the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church presided at the 11:00 AM liturgy at First United Methodist Church in Cleveland.  Bishop Marcus Miller of the Northeastern Ohio Synod preached. The service made the front page of Cleveland's largest paper, The Plain Dealer.
  • The Virginia Synod and Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church will celebrate a joint Transfiguration service February 26, 5:00 PM, at Bon Air United Methodist Church in Richmond, VA. Bishop Charlene Kammerer of the VA United Methodist Conference will preside at the Eucharist and Bishop James Mauney of the VA Synod will be the preacher.
  • The Southeastern, Northeastern and Western Iowa Synods and the Iowa Conference of The United Methodist Church are planning a joint service on May 11 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, IA. Please, contact the Southeastern Iowa Synod for more information.
2006 Ecumenical Seminary Essay Contest on Ecumenism for the 21st Century now underway. Lutheran Seminarians encouraged to submit an essay.

- Seeking Unity and Understanding

Take a look at the 2006 January issue of The Lutheran to see the creative ways Lutheran and Episcopalians come together in ministry six years after ratifying Called to Common Mission.  Read the article: Life Together.
The January-February issue of Lutheran Women Today features an article, "Kitchen Table Ecumenism" written by Phyllis Anderson, president of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Highlighting the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Anderson believes "This ecumenical vision is realized whenever diverse believers gather in Christ's name and dater to tell their truth and to hear the truth of others.  Jesus is there in the  midst of them, breathing his spirit into their separate hearts, drawing them into his one body."

"Challenging Disparity: The Promise of God - The Power of Solidarity"  Ecumenical Advocacy Days March 10-13, 2006 in Washington D.C. - Seeking Peace and Justice. Over 900 people participated in 2005 with top speakers from throughout the world.

What is a Conciliar Body?
Trinity Institute: 36th National Theological Conference: "The anatomy of reconciliation from violence to healing." We've seen many social conflicts reach a violent pitch in recent years.  These polarities breed violence - whether in the form of bullets or of severed relationships. In this conference we will explore freshly the meaning of reconciliation under today's pressing circumstances. Read more about this conference.

The Ecumenical Church in a Globalized World - The Lutheran World Federation and the ELCA office for Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations are cooperating with ELCA seminaries on a seminary January Term (J-Term) from January 7-24 in Geneva called: The Ecumenical Church in a Globalized World. Pope Invites Methodists to Lutheran Pact - Pope Benedict XVI encouraged Methodist leaders on Friday (Dec. 9) to join a landmark 1999 agreement between Lutherans and the Vatican that overcame centuries of disagreement on the nature of salvation. In his first official meeting with top-ranking officials of the World Methodist Council (WMC), Benedict urged the council to endorse the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, a 1999 Catholic-Lutheran accord on how humankind achieves salvation.

"God Is One": The Way of Islam by Marston Speight. Co-sponsored by National Council of Churches, USA. Islamic Society of North America and Hartford Seminary. The book was reprinted following 9/11, with a study guide written by Jack Rock. Upon the Initiative of Muslim leaders the three sponsoring organizations have come together to encourage churches throughout the United States to use this book and it's study guide as an adults education/Sunday school curriculum. Read more.
Religions for Peace has published Women of Faith Transforming Conflict: a Multi-Religious Training Manual designed to support and strengthen women of different faiths as they work to bring peace and post-conflict reconstruction.
National Multi-religious College Councils Summit - Coming Together 2: Johns Hopkins University Campus Ministries and the JHU Interfaith Council will host students who represent their college or university multi-religious councils in Baltimore from February 16-19, 2006. Read more.
EYCE - Ecumenical Youth Council in Europe : A study session titled  "Overcoming Islamophobia - promoting inter-religious dialogue and co-operation" in the  European Youth Centre Strasbourg, France. Check this link for more information and download the application. The session will be held on March 19-29, 2006.
ELCA Seminaries:
  • LSTC - The Rev. Dr. Mark Swanson will join the faculty at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago on July 1, 2006 as professor of Christian-Muslim Studies and Interfaith Relations. Read the news release.
     
  • Luther - Luther Seminary will host the third session of dialogue between the ELCA and the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) March 26-27,2006.

Lutheran Ecumenical Representatives Network (LERN)

The LERN network is comprised of ELCA clergy and laypeople appointed by their synodical bishops throughout the ELCA to conduct ecumenical activity on local and regional levels. LERN reps. meet annually at the National Workshop on Christian Unity and with staff members of the ELCA  Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations. These representatives and the LERN Executive Board meet the challenge of the ELCA’s strategic directions to authentically “step forward as a public church, support congregations, assist synods, produce wise and courageous leaders, and deepen and extend our... ecumenical relationships.”
