Lutheran Ecumenical Representatives Network (LERN) The LERN network is comprised of ELCA clergy and laypeople appointed by their synod bishops throughout the ELCA to conduct ecumenical activity on local and regional levels. LERN reps. meet annually at the National Workshop on Christian Unity and with staff members of the ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations. These representatives and the LERN Executive Board meet the challenge of the ELCA’s strategic directions to authentically “step forward as a public church,” “support congregations,” “assist synods,” produce “wise and courageous leaders,” and “deepen and extend our . . . ecumenical relationships.” The ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations is committed to the activity of ecumenical life and relation in the ELCA, and to the full and vibrant role of LERN as a companion in these ecumenical efforts. The ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations and LERN have differing tasks but a common goal in companionship. One of our shared tasks is to host the Annual Seminary Essay Contest on a topic relevant to "Ecumenism in the 21st Century." All ELCA Seminarians are encouraged to write an essay. The winning essayist receives a tuition grant and an opportunity to present the essay at the National Workshop on Christian Unity in Washington, D.C., from January 29- February 1, 2007. This directory lists LERN representatives by ELCA region and synod, with e-mail, postal addresses, and hyperlinks for your own access.
