A 7.9 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful to hit China in 30 years, struck south-western Sichuan province on Monday, May 12, killing more than 70,000 people.
Some 18,000 people are still listed as missing in the quake zone and nearly 300,000 are injured. Some 5 million people are homeless, with many still sheltering in the open under makeshift tarpaulins more than 3 months after the disaster.
While electricity has now been restored to much of the region, some roads remain blocked or inaccesible to the outside.
Relief efforts have been hampered by heavy rains, fears of mudslides and numerous aftershocks, the strongest of which was a magnitude of 6.1.
